Somen Somen

Warm climate, rich nature and historical townspace. Time goes by slowly in this island. A lot of local foods will entertain you. Shodoshima is the birthplace of harvesting olives in Japan. Olives have been harvested more than 100 years. The soy sauce production using tubs (“oke”) has been continuing for more than 400 years. There is a place called “Hishio no Sato”. More than a thousand tubs are still in the area. Tenobe somen noodles in Shodoshima is one of Japan’s three largest somen noodles. Visit Olive Garden, soy sauce factory and somen noodle shop. You can experience various things.

“Meiro no machi” is in Tonoshou-cho”, the west part of the island. It is an old street remaining from Nambokucho era. “Nakayama Mushiokuri” is an annual event continuing from the Edo period. Nakayama Farmer’s Kabuki and Hitoyama Farmer’s Kabuki have p a long history. It began more than 300 years ago. In fall, the hottest event called “Taiko matsuri” is held. It is spectacular when 100 people carry a 2 tons of taikodai to dedicate

Kobo Daishi Kobo Daishi

The eighty-eight sacred places in Shikoku is famous but there are ones in Shodoshima. The length is about 150 km. Some spots are precipitous though the process is one tenth of Shikoku. It is suitable for beginners. Enjoy walking in the amazing view of mountains and sea.
